Evaluation of Project 1
I researched different artists and photographer etc..., my main inspiration what banksy and Mr Brainwash. This is because their work linked into the brief and the project. I first researched into these two through the memories of a film i watched called 'exit through the girt shop' this film inspired me because it took my imagination and gave me my initial ideas. I investigated into Banksy and Mr brainwash through the internet and through film. My initial ideas were developed at the late stages of the project. I had many ideas including graffiti and still shots. I choose to go with graffiti because i could be a lot more creative with it, my main influences were all the street art that was around Copley/Sowerby Bridge. I went out to a local graffiti area and took pictures of all the graffiti in that area.
My techniques on Photoshop and with my camera through the project improved, this was because of all the samples that i did some of the final edits did not work for various reasons. In some cases too much background in the image so that that is was taking the viewer from the area that i wanted them to concentrate on. My photoshop skills have dramatically improved, i can use masks, blending modes, create brushes and alter hue/saturation within the image and a lot more. Here is an image from when i first started using photoshop;(Second Image) In this image all i did was alter the Hue/Saturation this was all i could do when i started the project now my skills have become more advanced and i can nearly use all the tools to perfection. Instead of just using blending modes as normal I can use them advanced and play around with the layer style.
I developed my ideas in Photoshop after i had i initial ideas. I started using different textures to create my samples such as paper texture and being creative. I sampled with the opacity and the transparency of the pictures. I used my time efficiently to research so further research was not required to develop my ideas further. At first i rejected the ideas of creating graffiti because the letter of the graffiti was hard to manipulate into another image. I was just going to take other peoples graffiti and not change the text that it read but i didi not like this idea because it did not take much effort to do and i believed i could stretch my photoshop ability further. In All of my final pieces there was always a obstacle to overcome, such as i had to make my own letter for the text if there wasn't any E.g. I had to create the letter a in DECAY because the letter B in the 2badmice piece was obstructing the letter. to do this i used the spot healing brush and then created a line to make the letter A stand out and so there wasn't any other letter in it. I experimented with all the tools that i could use and the spot healing brush was the most successful and worked the best, after i found out that with the lines that i was not happy with i could use the liquify option and the warp them into the shape i wanted it to be.
Evaluation of Final Picture for Project 1 - Environment
I arrived at my final pictures through my idea generation and samples. I used various techniques using layer blending modes, (Overlay, blending sliders and soft light etc...) mask, Changing opacity, Blending interior effects of group and using blending sliders. All these techniques were appropriate to use, i also used all the tools on photoshop such as spot healing brush and quick selection tool. Some of the time the blending modes did not work as well as i would have liked them too, for example the picture of the warehouse with the garage on did not work too well on the red brick wall this was because it was hard to make it look realistic, however i did my best to make it look believable.
The graffiti DECAY worked well on the mossed wall because it blended well and looks like it was sprayed on the wall and is now decaying away. The Graffiti i made of the word Environment worked well in nearly every picture this was because i selected the correct letter to use. i could have improved the neatness of the selecting letters in photoshop, however it worked well that it was sort of messy because it would have been how it was sprayed on.
The feedback i have received have been all positive and constructive. I took peoples feedback on board and edited the bits that needed it such as i got feedback that i should of held CMB at then moved the image into place so i did this and the image became more original. i also used the warp and distort to correct some of the letter that i could not use before. my work seemed to have a distinct pattern and to it, this could be believed to be a bad strategy to have however it worked in my favour because the techniques and the style that i was working in could stay the same which helped me stay original.
I was happy that i choose an idea that was challenging my ability because i have come out with more knowledge and strengths than i went in with. My work could have been developed a lot more and i could have maybe used a time lapse of decaying graffiti and used film instead of all photography this would have made my work more complex and i would have had to use my own initiative a lot more.
Overall
I Believe that my ability on photoshop have improved dramatically and my photography imagination has opened up, i am happy with my final outcome and the things i have achieved. I feel that i left myself not much time to produce a final outcome this was one of my weaknesses of this project and i will correct this in the next project. Overall i think that the project was a success and i was able to experiment with new techniques and the concept of photography.
